Jacques was brooding, pissed off, on the ride back to Jacmel and from there back on a minibus to Port-au-Prince. I was squeezed between my guide and a young man with a battered suitcase on his lap, the road winding through banana-leaf valleys and green hills covered with brush puckered and ruffled like broccoli (or brains, I thought, my hand dipping into my purse again to feel the tobacco tin).

“You paid him too much,” Jacques said eventually. “You’re going to cause trouble. Does this worm really do what you say?”

“Yes. If it’s the same thing.”

“Then I take it back. You should have paid him more.” He smirked. “Me too. We should make another stop. I want you to see a houngan. A vodou priest. It sounds like you are messing with the spirit world already; perhaps you need some perspective.”
